CARLOV (Carvedilol) by Hilton Pharma is 30 tablets of 6.25 mg. It is used for High blood pressure (hypertension), Heart failure, and left ventricular dysfunction (reduced heart pumping function).

Indications/ Uses: CARLOV tablets are indicated for the following:

  • Essential hypertension: Treatment of essential mild to moderate hypertension.
  • Symptomatic congestive heart failure: Carvedilol is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate symptomatic heart failure (stable) of ischaemic or cardiomyopathic origin. Carvedilol may be used as adjunct to standard therapy. Carvedilol has been used in patients who are unable to tolerate an ACE-inhibitor and patients who are not receiving digitalis.

Side Effects:

  • The most common side effects observed with CARLOV are dizziness, headache, postural hypotension, and fatigue (which are usually mild and occur particularly at the beginning of treatment), as well as diarrhea, nausea, and bradycardia. Edema of varying locations (CHF), cardiac failure during up-titration, hyperglycaemia (in CHF patients with diabetes), hypercholesterolaemia (CHF), acute renal failure (CHF), exacerbation of symptoms in patients with intermittent claudication or Raynaud’s phenomenon.
  • There have been incidental reports of stuffy nose and wheezing in predisposed patients, asthma/dyspnea, syncope, angina pectoris, AV-block, cold extremities and allergic skin reactions (including urticaria), increase in serum transaminases, and reduction of the platelet and white blood cell counts.
  • Since Carvedilol has alpha-blocking properties plus beta-blocking effects, the following side-effects may be associated with its use: scalp tingling and other forms of paraesthesia, muscular weakness and cramps, failure of ejaculation, reduced libido, impotence, urine retention, insomnia, dreams, depression, angioedema and fever.
  • Carvedilol may, in individual cases, induce psoriasis, cause deterioration of the symptoms of the disease or lead to psoriatic forms of exanthema. Other general side-effects of the beta-adrenoreceptor blocking agents are transient loss of hearing, metabolic disturbances, weight gain, alopecia, myopathies, dry eyes, stomatitis and central nervous system effects such as hallucinations, confusion, psychotic episodes, disturbances of sleep and vision.

Contraindications: Carvedilol may be avoided in the following patients:

  • Decompensated heart failure requiring inotropic support.
  • 2nd and 3rd degree AV block.
  • Sick sinus syndrome (including sino-atrial block).
  • Severe bradycardia (<50 bpm).
  • Asthma.
  • Cardiogenic shock.
  • In children.
  • Clinically manifested liver dysfunction.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with bronchospasm.
  • Severe hypotension (systolic blood pressure <85 mm Hg).
  • Hypersensitivity to the medicine.  CARLOV back
