Metodine
Metodine (Di-iodohydroxyquinoline and Metronidazole) by Searle is a 60ml (Approx) Suspension. It is used to treat certain intestinal infections caused by parasites.
Package Contains: Each Metodine package contains a Suspension (syrup) bottle of 60ml & a leaflet.
Composition: Each 5 ml contains: 
Di-iodohydroxyquinoline U.S.P. 200mg
Metronidazole Benzoate equivalent to Metronidazole B.P. 200mg
Dosage & Administration: To be sold on prescription of a registered medical practitioner only
For Children: Upto 4 years: 1 teaspoonful (5ml) thrice daily for 5-10 days.
4-12 years: 2 teaspoonfuls (10ml) thrice daily for 5-10 days or as directed by the physician.
Uses/ Indications: Metronidazole Suspension is indicated for the treatment of intestinal and extra-intestinal amoebiasis, amoebic liver abscess, and in the treatment of giardiasis.
Side Effects/ Adverse Reactions: Di-iodohydroxyquinoline: The following side/adverse effects have been selected on the basis of their potential clinical significance (possible signs and symptoms in parentheses where appropriate)-not necessarily inclusive:
Those indicating need for medical attention: Incidence is less frequent
- Fever or chills.
- Hypersensitivity (skin rash, hives, or itching).
- Thyroid gland enlargement (swelling of the neck).
With prolonged, high doses of 8-hydroxyquinolines, Children may be more susceptible.
- Optic atrophy (blurred vision or any change in vision).
- Optic neuritis (decreased vision or eye pain).
- Peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness in hands or feet).
- Subacute myelo-optic neuropathy (blurred vision or any change in vision, clumsiness or unsteadiness, increased weakness, or muscle pain).
Those indicating need for medical attention only if they continue or are bothersome:
- Incidence more frequent: Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea or vomiting; stomach pain).
- Incidence is less frequent: Headache. Itching of the rectal area.
Before using this medication, Conditions affecting use, especially:
- Hypersensitivity to di-iodohydroxyquinoline, cloroxine, iodine, pamaquine, pentaquine, primaquine, or other 8-hydroxyquinolines.
- Use in children: Children may be more likely to develop side effects such as optic atrophy, optic neuritis, and peripheral neuropathy, especially with long-term, high-dose therapy.
- Other medical problems, especially hepatic or renal disease.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to 8-hydroxyquinoline, iodine-containing preparations, metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives; hepatic damage; active organic disease of the CNS; patients with a history of blood dyscrasia; and pre-existing optic neuropathy. Because metronidazole crosses the placental barrier, Metodine is contraindicated during the first three months of pregnancy.
Instruction: Use as directed by the physician. Shake well before use. Protect from moisture, freezing, excessive heat and sunlight. Keep out of the reach of children.
