Cicatrin

Cicatrin (Neomycin Sulphate + Bacitracin Zinc) powder is very effective for minor cuts, burns, and abrasions. It is for external use only. It is a topical antibiotic and used to treat and prevent skin infections. This powder inhibits the growth of bacteria and is, therefore, an effective antibacterial agent when used on cuts and wounds, as it kills the bacterial cells & promotes healing.

Composition: / Contains:

Neomycin Sulphate B.P. 3300 Units per gram
Bacitracin Zinc B.P. 250 Units per gram
In starch dusting powder base.

Dosage & Administration:

For adults: 1-4 times/day.
Treatment should not be continued for >7 days without medical supervision.
Not recommended for 2<yrs. old.
Caution should be exercised in cases where a decrease in renal function exists, and significant systematic absorption of neomycin sulphate may occur.

Indications: Cicatrin powder is indicated for Prophylaxis in minor burns, cuts, scratches, abrasions, and following the suturing of lacerations, infected ulcers, superficial skin infections following surgical procedures, impetigo, and secondarily infected skin conditions.

Its ingredients & their Uses:

Cicatrin ingredient, Neomycin Sulphate, is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is used against Gram-negative bacteria and some Gram-positive bacteria. It is used mainly for topical infections, though it can also be used orally. It’s often found in combination with other antibiotics.

Its other ingredient, Bacitracin Zinc, is a polypeptide antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is effective primarily against Gram-positive bacteria. It is used for the prevention of infection in minor skin injuries, treatment of mild skin infections, & post-surgical or wound care.

Contraindications: Allergic hypersensitivity to the product or any of its constituents, or to cross-sensitizing substances and other related antibiotics. Due to the known ototoxic and nephrotoxic potential of neomycin sulphate, the use in large quantities or on large areas for prolonged periods of time is not recommended.

Precautions & Warnings:

The recommended dosage should not be exceeded.
As with other antibacterial preparations, prolonged use may result in overgrowth by non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
Neomycin sulphate can be toxic, so patients with impaired kidney function should use it only if prescribed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Pregnancy and Lactation: It is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.

Adverse effects: Allergic hypersensitivity may occur. The ingredients themselves may cause redness, itching, or rash at the application site.

Interactions: Neuromuscular blocking agents.
