Indications / Uses: For the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral & bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe.

Detailed Description: Corticosteroids inhibit the inflammatory response to a variety of inciting agents. They inhibit the edema, fibrin deposition, capillary dilation, leukocyte migration, capillary proliferation, and fibroblast proliferation, as well as the deposition of collagen and scar formation associated with inflammation.

Corticosteroids are capable of producing a rise in intraocular pressure. Patients treated with both Dexamethasone & Fluorometholone demonstrated a lower propensity to increase intraocular pressure than did Dexamethasone.

Fluorometholone has 40 times the powerful anti-inflammatory action of hydrocortisone. Fluorometholone is more rapidly degraded in the tissue and therefore has less effect on the intraocular pressure.

Contraindications: Florom sterile ophthalmic suspension is contraindicated in most viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, including epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia, varicella and also in mycobacterial infections of the eye and fungal diseases of ocular structures. Florom sterile ophthalmic suspension is also contraindicated in individuals with known or suspected hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this preparation and to other corticosteroids.

Precautions /warnings:

All eye drops containing steroids may cause an increase in intraocular pressure.

Prolonged topical corticosteroid therapy can lead to the formation of posterior subcapsular cataract.

Perforation of the globe when used in conditions where there is thinning of the cornea or sclera.

Prolonged use of topical steroids may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.

Corticosteroid medication requires great care while treating patients with a history of herpes simplex keratitis.

Extensive or prolonged use of topical steroids should be avoided during pregnancy.
