Blephamide

Blephamide Allergan S.O.P. sterile ophthalmic ointment of 3.5gm. Sulphacetamide sodium at 10% concentration is a potent bacteriostatic agent (effective against a broad range of pathogens, including Staphylococci).

The prednisolone content (in microfine, non-irritating suspension) effectively counters the allergic and inflammatory manifestations of blepharitis. The Phenylephrine components rapidly widen the engorged vessels in the eye and lid.

Package Contains: Each pack of Blephamide contains 3.5 g of sterile ointment in an ophthalmic tube & leaflet.

Compositions: Each gram contains:

Sulphacetamide

Sodium 100mg

Prednisolone Acetate 2mg with Phenyl mercuric acetate, Mineral oil, White petrolatum, and Lanolin alcohol.

Dosage and administration: And For further details, please refer to the direction circular. A small amount, approximately 1/2 inch ribbon of ointment, should be applied in the conjunctival sac three to four times daily and once or twice at night.

Uses: It is used for blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Keratitis (corneal inflammation, under supervision), Blepharoconjunctivitis (infection involving eyelids and conjunctiva), and Conditions where inflammation needs to be reduced and there’s a risk or presence of bacterial infection. To prevent infection and reduce inflammation during healing (only if prescribed by an ophthalmologist).

Side Effects: Common: Mild stinging or burning after application. Blurred vision (short-term). Watery eyes, Eye redness or discomfort, Slight irritation or itching.

Rare:

• Allergic reaction (swelling, rash, severe itching, difficulty breathing).
• Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is possible with long-term use of steroids.
• Symptoms: eye pain, halos around lights, blurred vision.
• Secondary fungal or viral infection, prolonged steroid use can reduce local immunity.
• Cataract formation (if used for a long time).
• Worsening of undiagnosed viral eye infections (e.g., herpes simplex keratitis).

Precautions & Warnings: Fatalities have occurred, although rarely, due to severe reactions to sulfonamides, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, fulminant hepatic necrosis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, and other blood dyscrasias. Sensitizations may recur when a sulfonamide is re-administered, irrespective of the route of administration.

Sensitivity reactions have been reported in individuals with no prior history of sulfonamide hypersensitivity. At the first sign of hypersensitivity, skin rash, an Increase in purulent discharge, or aggravation of inflammation or pain, the patient should discontinue use of the medication and consult a physician. Cross-sensitivity between different sulfonamides or between corticosteroids may occur.

Instructions: Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Use only on medical advice. Keep out of reach of children. Once opened, use within one month. For ophthalmic use only.
