Indication: Epilene gel is indicated for the topical treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

Dosage and Administration: Epilene gel should be applied on affected areas after washing in the evening before retiring. A thin film of the gel is applied avoiding eyes, lips, and mucous membranes.

During the early weeks of therapy, an apparent exacerbation of acne may be due to the action of the medication on previously unseen lesions and should be considered a reason to discontinue therapy. Therapeutic results should be evident in eight to twelve weeks of treatment.

Contraindication: The gel should not be administered to those who are hypersensitive to adapalene or any of the components in the vehicle.

Warnings: The gel should be discontinued if hypersensitivity to the ingredients is noted. Patients with sunburn should be advised not to use Epilene gel until fully recovered.

Precautions: Patients should be advised to avoid exposure to either sunlight or artificial UV irradiation sources. Weather extremes also may be irritating to patients under treatment with the gel. Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, angles of the nose, and mucous membranes, it should not be applied to cuts, abrasions, eczematous skin, or sunburned skin.

Certain cutaneous signs and symptoms, such as erythema, dryness, scaling pruritus, may be experienced during treatment. These are most likely in the first two to four weeks and will usually lessen with continued use of the gel. Depending upon the severity of adverse events, patients should be instructed about the frequency of application or to discontinue use.

Drug Interactions: Cautions in concomitant use of other potentially irritating topical products or soaps, cleansers, and cosmetics that have high concentrations of alcohol & astringents.  Particular caution should be exercised in using agents containing sulfur and salicylic acid in combination with Epilene gel.

Pregnancy & Lactation: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies done in pregnant & nursing women.

Side Effects: Pruritus or burning after application occurs in approximately 20% of patients, 1% or less of patients experience burning/stinging, erythema, sunburn, and acne flares. These are mostly occurring during the first month of therapy and decrease in frequency and severity over the period of time.

Over Dosage: Epilene is intended for cutaneous use only. If applied excessively, no more rapid or better results will be obtained and there will be peeling, or discomfort may occur. Chronic ingestion of the drug may lead to the side effects as those associated with excessive oral intake of Vitamin A.
