Actrapid HM

Actrapid HM by Novo Nordisk is a 10 ml, 100 iu/ml solution for injection in a vial. It is used to control high blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes.

Indications / Uses: Actrapid HM 100 IU/mL Injection contains human insulin, a fast-acting insulin. It works by lowering blood glucose levels by helping glucose move from the blood into muscle and fat cells, where it can be used for energy. It also reduces glucose production by the liver.

  • Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Actrapid is used to control blood glucose levels in people with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, a condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin treatment is required to maintain normal glucose metabolism.
  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Actrapid may be used to control blood glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus when insulin treatment is required, including when the body’s insulin production is insufficient or blood glucose cannot be adequately controlled with other treatments.
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA): Actrapid may be used to help treat diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious condition that can happen when the body does not have enough insulin. DKA can cause very high blood sugar and a buildup of acids called ketones in the blood. Treatment usually includes insulin, fluids, and electrolytes. In hospital, Actrapid may be given through a vein (intravenously) under close medical supervision.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia): Using too much insulin, missing or delaying a meal, exercising more than usual, or drinking alcohol may cause blood sugar to fall too low. Monitor your blood glucose regularly and follow your prescribed insulin and meal schedule.
  • Do not use during hypoglycaemia: If your blood sugar is already low or you suspect that you are experiencing hypoglycaemia, do not take Actrapid until the low blood sugar has been appropriately treated. Do not use Actrapid if the solution is not clear and colourless, or if it has been frozen or stored incorrectly.
  • Changes in insulin treatment: Changing the brand, type, strength or source of insulin may require a dose adjustment. Such changes should be made under medical supervision.
  • Kidney or liver problems: People with kidney or liver disease may require closer blood glucose monitoring and adjustment of their insulin dose.
  • Illness, diet and exercise: Infection, fever, changes in diet or increased physical activity can affect your insulin requirements. Consult your doctor if your usual blood glucose control changes.
  • Injection-site care: Rotate injection sites regularly. Repeatedly injecting into the same area can cause lumps, thickening or loss of fatty tissue under the skin and may affect insulin absorption.
  • Other medicines: Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take, as some medicines can increase or decrease the blood-glucose-lowering effect of insulin.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol may make your blood glucose rise or fall and can increase the risk of hypoglycaemia. Monitor your blood glucose carefully if you drink alcohol.
  • Driving and operating machinery: Low or high blood sugar can affect concentration and reaction time. Take appropriate precautions, particularly if you experience frequent episodes of hypoglycaemia.
  • Intravenous use: Actrapid may be administered intravenously when medically necessary, but this must only be done by healthcare professionals. Patients should not inject Actrapid directly into a vein themselves.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding:

  • Pregnancy: Actrapid HM is considered safe for use by pregnant women. However, it must be used only when necessary, and the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Breast-feeding: Use of insulin by breastfeeding women is considered acceptable. Breastfeeding women generally require lower doses of insulin.

After first opening: Use within 6 weeks when stored below 30°C. Do not refrigerate. Discard the needle after each injection. To be Sold on the prescription of a registered Medical Practitioner only.

Instruction: Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Read the package leaflet before use. Store in a refrigerator (2°C-8°C). Do not freeze Keep the vial in the outer carton in order to protect from light.  Actrapid HM back
