Augmentin
Augmentin DS 312.50mg/5ml Syrup/Suspension is used for the treatment of bacterial infections such as; joint and bone infections, dental infections, & urinary tract infections.
Package contains: Each package of Augmentin DS contains 90 ml suspension in a powder form. It is also available in the form of tablets.
Composition:
Before reconstitution keep tightly closed. When dispensed as directed each 5ml contains 250mg amoxicillin as amoxicillin trihydrate U.S.P and 62.50mg clavulanic acid as the potassium salt B.P.
Dosage: Shake well before taking each dose.
Once dispensed the suspension must be kept in the refrigerator and used within 7 days.
Children: The usual recommended daily dosage is:
- Lower dose: 20/5 to 40/10 mg/kg/day in three divided doses for mild to moderate infections (upper respiratory tract infections e.g. recurrent tonsillitis, lower respiratory infections, and skin and soft tissue infections).
- Higher dose. 40/10 to 60/15 mg/kg/day in three divided doses for the treatment of more serious infections (upper respiratory tract infections e.g. otitis media and sinusitis, lower respiratory tract infections e.g. bronchopneumonia and urinary tract infections).
Indications: Augmentin DS is an antibiotic. It shows effectiveness by stopping the growth of bacteria. Augmentin oral presentations for three times daily dosing are indicated for short-term treatment of bacterial infections at the following sites:
- Upper respiratory tract infections (including ENT) e.g. recurrent tonsilitis, sinusitis, otitis media, typically caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Lower respiratory tract infections e.g. acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB), (AECOPD), lobar and bronchopneumonia, typically caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Genito-urinary tract infections e.g. cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, female genital infections typically caused by Enterobacteriaceae (mainly Escherichia coli), Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Enterococcus species and gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhea.
- Skin and soft tissue infections, e.g. boils, abscesses, cellulitis, wound infections.
- Bone and joint infections e.g. osteomyelitis, typically caused by Staphylococcus aureus, where more prolonged therapy may be appropriate.
- Dental infections e.g. dentoalveolar abscess.
- Other infections e g. intra-abdominal sepsis, septic abortion, puerperal sepsis.
- Infections caused by amoxycillin susceptible organisms are amenable to Augmentin treatment due to its amoxycillin content.
Warnings & Precautions: Before initiating therapy with Augmentin, careful inquiry should be made concerning previous hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin, cephalosporins or other allergens.
Side effects: Children: Common Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
All populations: Nausea is more often associated with higher oral dosages. If gastrointestinal reactions are evident, they may be reduced by taking it at the start of a meal.
Uncommon Indigestion: Very rare: Antibiotic-associated colitis (including pseudomembranous colitis and hemorrhagic colitis), drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome.
Instructions:
Augmentin DS should not be used for more than 14 days without review.
Store below 25°C in a dry place.
Keep out of the reach of children.
