Imodium
Imodium (loperamide hydrochloride) capsules are white powder filled in hard gelatin capsules green cap and opaque dark body. It is intended for oral administration. It is an anti-propulsive agent used in the treatment of diarrhea.
Package Contains: Each packet contains film coated 60 tablets in 6 strips of 2mg each capsule.
Composition: Imodium capsule 2mg (loperamide hydrochloride Capsule USP)
Each capsule contains: Loperamide HCI (Ph. Er) 2mg.
Dosage: As prescribed by the physician. To be sold on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner only. The capsules should be taken with liquid.
Adults and Children 6-17 years: For Acute diarrhea: the initial dose is 2 capsules (4mg) for adults and 1 capsule (2mg) for children; follows by 1 capsule after every subsequent loose stool.
For Chronic diarrhea: the initial dose is 2 capsules (4mg) for adults and 1 capsule (2mg) daily for children; this initial dose will be adjusted until 1-2 solid stools a day, which is usually achieved with a maintenance dose of 1-6 capsules (2mg – 12mg) daily.
The maximum dose for acute and chronic diarrhea is 8 capsules (16 mg) per day. In children, the maximum dose must be related to the bodyweight (3 capsules/20kg) but should not exceeded by 8 capsules per day. Or advice by a physician.
Indications: Loperamide HCI is indicated for the symptomatic control of acute and chronic diarrhea. In patients with an ileostomy, it can be used to reduce the number and volume of stools and to harden their consistency.
Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity. Should not be used in children under 2 years of age. Should not be used as the primary therapy:
- In patients with acute dysentery, which is characterized by blood in stools and high fever,
- In patients with acute ulcerative colitis, in patients with bacterial enterocolitis caused by invasive organisms including Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter,
- In patients with pseudomembranous colitis associated with the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.
- Loperamide HCI should not be used when inhibition of peristalsis is to be avoided due to the possible risk of significant sequelae including ileus, megacolon and toxic megacolon.
- Loperamide HCI must be discontinued promptly when constipation, abdominal distension or ileus develop.
Warnings and Precautions: Treatment of diarrhea with Loperamide HCI is only symptomatic. Determine underlying etiology, for specific treatment when appropriate. In children with diarrhea, fluid and electrolyte depletion may occur.
In acute diarrhea, if clinical improvement is not observed within 48 hours, discontinue Loperamide and advise to consult physician. In AIDS Patients stop therapy at the earliest signs of abdominal distension.
Patients with hepatic dysfunction should be monitored closely for signs of central nervous system (CNS) toxicity.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The anticipated therapeutic benefits should be weighed against potential hazards before Loperamide HCI is given during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.
Loperamide HCI is not recommended during breast-feeding.
