Polyfax
Polyfax is a skin ointment for external use only. It is used for superficial skin infections, which are infections of the outer layers of the skin, often caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus. Its ingredients are polypeptide antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections, particularly those caused by gram-negative bacteria.
Package Contains: Each package contains a 20-gram Polyfax ointment tube. It is also available as an eye ointment.

Polymyxin B Sulphate B.P equivalent to Polymyxin B 10,000 Units
Bacitracin Zinc B.P equivalent to Bacitracin 500 Units
Petrolatum base to 1.0 G
U.S.P Specifications
Dosage & Administration: It is for topical skin administration only. Adults: a thin film of the ointment should be applied. Use one or more times a day, as necessary.
Indications: (Uses) Treatment where superficial skin infection is present or likely to occur. These include:
- Prophylaxis in burns, Graft donor sites, surgical incisions, accidental cuts, scratches and abrasions.
- Therapeutic use in primarily infected dermatoses such as impetigo, bacterial otitis externa, and ecthyma.
- Folliculitis and paronychia; in secondarily infected dermatoses, such as infected eczema, secondary infected lesions of infestations (e.g scabies) and secondary bacterial infection accompanying viral infections.
- Also indicated in the treatment of infected ulcers, accidental cuts, scratches and abrasions and superficial skin infections following surgical procedures & burns.
- Use does not exclude concomitant systemic therapy with other antibiotics where appropriate.
Contraindications: Patients who are hypersensitive to Polyfax B sulphate, bacitracin zinc or to cross-sensitising substances.
Warnings & Precautions: Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. The possibility of systemic absorption of the active ingredients exists. Avoid the introduction of ointment into the eyes. If it is accidentally introduced into the eye, the eye should be rinsed thoroughly with cold water.
Pregnancy & Lactation: The clinical benefit of treatment to the patient must be balanced against any possible but unknown hazards in the developing fetus.
Adverse Reactions: Rare: Application site hypersensitivity including urticaria, Application site reactions including pain, irritation, oedema, burning sensation, erythema, pruritis, blister, scaling, skin discolouration.
Overdosage: If toxic symptoms develop following significant systemic absorption of the active ingredients of the ointment, treatment with the product should be stopped.
