Muconyl

Muconyl by Barrett Hodgson Expectorant is sugar-free, 60 ml Syrup. It is used for the relief of bronchospasm and congestion.

Package Contains: Each Muconyl package contains a syrup bottle of 60ml.

Composition:  Each 5 ml contains:

Terbutaline sulphate 1.5 mg

Guaiphenesin 66.5 mg

Dosage & Administration: As directed by the physician. The dosage should be individualised for any patient.

Adults: 2-3 teaspoonfuls (10-15ml) 3 times in 24 hours.

Elderly: Dosage as for adults.

Children: 0.075mg (0.25ml)/kg body weight 3 times in 24 hours.

Under 3 years: 1/2 teaspoonful

3-5 years: 1/2 to 1 teaspoonful

6-12 years: 1-11/2 teaspoonful

Over 12 years: Adult dose

If an adequate response is not obtained with this dose, it may be doubled, provided adverse reactions are not pronounced. It contains no colour and is sugar-free, with a raspberry flavour.

Uses/Indications:  It is commonly used for bronchial asthma, Chronic bronchitis, Emphysema, and other lung diseases in which bronchospasm and secretion are complicating factors.

Side Effects/Adverse reactions: Tremors, headache, tonic muscle cramps, and palpitations. These are all characteristic of sympathomimetic amines. The majority of these are spontaneously reversible within the first 1-2 weeks of treatment. In children, sleep disturbance and behavioural disturbances have been observed.  

Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity to Terbutaline or any of its ingredients.

Warnings & Precautions: Caution in patients with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and diabetes. Beta-2-agonists have an arrhythmogenic potential. Hypokalaemia may result when given along with xanthine derivatives, steroids, and diuretics or by hypoxia. It is recommended that serum potassium levels be monitored in such situations. It does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Pregnancy & Lactation: No teratogenic effects have been observed in animals or patients. However, caution should be exercised during the first trimester of pregnancy. It is excreted in breast milk. An influence on the suckling child is, however, unlikely at therapeutic doses.
