After reconstitution, each 5ml suspension contains:

Cefpodoxime Proxetil USP equivalent to

Cefpodoxime 40 mg.

Dosage: As directed by the physician and see package insert for further prescribing information.

Directions for reconstitution: Shake the bottle to loosen the mass. Add freshly boiled and cooled water below the mark given on the bottle label, then shake to make a homogeneous suspension. Add further the same water up to the mark on the bottle label and shake vigorously to form a uniform suspension (syrup).

Therapeutic Indications: Cefpodoxime proxetil is indicated for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in the conditions listed below:

  • Acute otitis media: Caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (excluding penicillin-resistant strains), Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase-producing strains), or Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase-producing strains).
  • Pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis: Caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Community-acquired pneumonia: Caused by S. pneumoniae or H. influenzae (including beta-lactamase-producing strains).
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: Caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae (non-beta-lactamase-producing strains only), or M. catarrhalis. Data are insufficient at this time to establish efficacy in patients with acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by beta-lactamase-producing strains of H. influenzae.
  • Acute uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhoea: Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae (including penicillinase-producing strains). Acute uncomplicated ano-rectal infections in women: Due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae (including penicillinase-producing strains).
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections: Caused by Staphylococcus aureus (including penicillinase-producing strains) or Streptococcus pyogenes. Abscesses should be surgically drained as clinically indicated.
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis: Caused by Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase-producing strains), Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Moraxella catarrhalis.
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis): Caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, or Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
  • Note: Appropriate specimens for bacteriological examination should be obtained in order to isolate and identify causative organisms and to determine their susceptibility to cefpodoxime. Once these results become available, antimicrobial therapy should be adjusted accordingly.

Side Effects: Common: Loss of appetite, gastric pressure, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhoea.

Uncommon: Allergic reaction, such as mucocutaneous reactions, skin rashes, urticaria and pruritus. Headaches, paraesthesia, dizziness, tinnitus, asthenia or malaise.

Rare: Haematological disorders, such as reduction in haemoglobin, thrombocytosis, and bloody diarrhoea, can occur as a symptom of enterocolitis. The possibility of pseudomembranous enterocolitis should be considered if severe or persistent diarrhea occurs during or after treatment. Transient moderate elevations of ASAT, ALAT and alkaline phosphatase and/or bilirubin, these laboratory abnormalities, which may be explained by the infection, may rarely exceed twice the upper limit of the named range and elicit a pattern of liver injury, usually cholestatic and most often asymptomatic.

Instruction:

  • For oral use only. Tightly close the cap after use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not store over 30°C, and protect from heat and moisture.
  • Improper storage may deteriorate the medicine.
