CEFSPAN Suspension

CEFSPAN Suspension (Cefixime) is a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic available as a powder for oral suspension. After reconstitution, each 5 ml contains 100 mg of cefixime (as trihydrate). It is used in the treatment of various categories of bacterial infections. It is a third-generation orally taken Cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefixime is itself an antibiotic medicine.

Package Contains: Each Cefspan package contains an oral suspension bottle of 30ml, a cup for measurement & a leaflet.

USP Specification

Dosage & Administration: Please see the direction circular. The presence of food does not significantly modify the absorption of Cefspan. The usual course of treatment is 5-14 days.

Adults & children over 12 years:

  • The recommended adult dosage is 400mg daily, administered as a single dose.
  • The dosage may be adjusted depending on the patient’s age, body weight, symptoms, and renal function, given orally either once daily or twice daily.

The Elderly: Elderly patients may be given the same dose as recommended for adults. Renal function should be assessed, and dosage should be adjusted in severe renal impairment.

Directions for Reconstitution:

  • To reconstitute, suspend with 20 ml of water (previously boiled and cooled).
  • Before reconstituting the suspension, tap the bottle gently to loosen the powder.

Method: Add 10 ml of water to the contents in the bottle, invert & shake to wet powder. Then add a further 10 ml of water & shake to make a suspension. Reconstituted suspension should be consumed within a week.

Uses/ Indications:  Cefspan is indicated in the treatment of the following infections caused by the following micro-organisms susceptible to Cefspan.

  • Throat infections and tonsillitis.
  • Ear infections (otitis media).
  • Sinus infections (sinusitis).
  • Chest infections and bronchitis.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Typhoid fever.
  • Certain bacterial skin infections.
  • Gonorrhea and some other bacterial infections.

Side Effects/ Adverse reactions: Anaphylactic reaction including shock, internal swelling of the larynx with airways constriction, fever, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Rash, Erythema (Erythema multiform), Pruritis, Leukopenia, Eosinophilia, Thrombocytopenia, increases in GOT, GPT, and alkaline phosphatase. Serious GI (such as pseudomembranous colitis), Diarrhoea, Abdominal pain, Vomiting, Nausea. Transient elevation in BUN or creatinine clearance, Headache, Dizziness.

Overdose: No specific antidote exists. General supportive measures are recommended.

Contraindications: Patients with known allergy to the Cephalosporin group of antibiotics. Or any other components of the product.
