Spasler-P (Hyoscine butyl bromide) 5mg / 5ml is a banana-flavored is an antispasmodic syrup & it has antimuscarinic effects. It is used in gastro-intestinal disorders because of their marked inhibitory effect on gastro-intestinal motility and their antisecretory effects.

It is used to relieve the pain of smooth muscle spasm associated with the gastro-intestinal and gastro-urinary tracts and it has also been used as an adjunct in the treatment of peptic ulcer. It also relieves painful spasms of the biliary and genitourinary systems.

Hyoscine butyl bromide is effective in the prevention and control of motion sickness and has also been given as an antiemetic in the prophylactic treatment/of other forms of nausea.

Composition:

Each 5 ml syrup contains:

Hyoscine butyl bromide (B.P Specs) 5 mg.

Dosage & Instructions:

Infants: 1 teaspoon full 3 times daily.

Children: 1- 6 years: 1-2 teaspoonfuls 3 times daily.

Children over 6 years & adults: 2 teaspoonfuls 3-5 times daily.

This dosage may be adjusted by the physician. Do not store above 30°C. Protect from light, freezing, and heat. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children. To be sold on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner only.

Indications (Usage): Spasler-P can be used for the short-term treatment of:

  • Colics due to renal and biliary calculi.
  • Acute pain due to spasm of bile duct, urinary passage or gastrointestinal tract.
  • Spastic conditions of the female genital system.
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Pain of uncertain origin in the abdominal region.

Contraindications: It is considered unsafe in porphyric patients. It is also recommended that concurrent use of alcohol should be avoided. It should not be given to patients with closed-angle or narrow angle glaucoma.

It is contraindicated in patients with prostatic enlargement & in patients with ulcerative colitis its use may lead to ileus or mega-colon and its effects on the lower oesophageal sphincter may exacerbate reflux.

The syrup is contraindicated in patients who have a history of hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Drug Interactions: Hyoscine butyl bromide should not be used concurrently with CNS depressants. Its effects may be enhanced by the concomitant administration of other drugs with antimuscarinic properties such as amantadine, some antihistamines, butyrophenones and phenothiazines, and tricyclic antidepressants.

Adverse Reactions: The peripheral side effects of hyoscine butyl bromide include dryness of the mouth with difficulty in swallowing and talking, thirst, reduced bronchial, secretions, dilatation of pupils (mydriasis) with loss of accommodation and photophobia, flushing and dryness of the skin, transient bradycardia followed by tachycardia, with palpitations and arrhythmias and difficulty in micturation as well as reduction in the tone and motility of gastrointestinal tract leading to constipation.

Hyoscine butyl bromide produces central depression at therapeutic doses, and symptoms include drowsiness & fatigue. Occasional vomiting may also occur. Since it may affect vision, caution should be taken while driving or operating machinery. Toxic doses of hyoscine butyl bromide cause tachycardia, rapid respiration, and hyperpyrexia.

Pregnancy & Lactation: The Safety of hyoscine butyl bromide during pregnancy has not yet been established. The usual precautions regarding the use of drugs at this time, especially during the first trimester, should be observed. Safety during lactation has not yet been established. Spasler-P-back
